Do Significant Results Accrue from Hiring Motivational Speakers?
There is a commonly held misconception that motivational speakers may affect an immediate rise in the motivational level and therefore, the productivity of an organization’s employees, but that this morale boost is short lived and quickly passes, leaving no long term benefit. This is a myth, at least in regard to the outcomes consistently achieved by high content delivery professional speakers.
Motivational keynote speakers can have a profound and lasting impact on a company’s employees. However, in order for this to occur, several conditions must be met. First, the motivational speaker must deliver more than merely an inspirational and motivational message. Rousing the troops may seem like a good idea, but unless they are provided with the needed tools to succeed, mere motivation alone may become de-motivation over the longer term, as they repeatedly fail to meet their objectives.
It is not uncommon to receive a telephone call asking me to provide a “motivational speech to the staff.” A frequent response of mine is: “Why do they need to be motivated?” The answer is often along the lines of: “We’ve been having some problems …”. Then I begin to explain that motivation does not make problems go away. Problems need to be addressed head-on. Once the problems are resolved, then it is the time to motivate the troops, not before. This is not to infer that all problems can be solved perfectly and completely. We live in an imperfect world and sometimes, we must live with less than perfect solutions. Employees understand that. What they do not understand is an employer that ignores or trivializes real issues.
Part of the work of many motivational speakers, those who have a strong and diverse business background, is to help the client identify, analyze and to the extent possible, resolve workplace issues and problems. Those of us motivational speakers who also have extensive consulting experience, recognize that often our preparation for a keynote speech uncovers issues and problems that have remained heretofore unaddressed. These discoveries arise through interviews and discussions with company personnel that form part of the motivational speaker’s background research, necessary to proper speech preparation.
When a veteran keynote motivational speaker understands the issues and problems the company’s personnel face and can deliver sound, practical guidance as well as encouragement in the form of motivation and inspiration, the results are both immediate and long lasting. Employees who are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to overcome the obstacles they encounter, will rise to the challenge. Knowing that their leaders value them and have retained the services of the motivational speaker for their benefit, further builds employee confidence and trust in the organization’s leadership.
