Generational Issues Facing Business
Motivational keynote Generation Y (Gen-Y) Millennial speaker John Di Frances understands that many businesses today are facing generational issues as the Boomer’s begin retiring in large numbers and Generation Y, Gen-Y or the Millennials as they are also known, enter the workforce. Gen Y represents the largest generation in our history. Having graduated from high school in 2000 or later, they are just beginning to impact the workplace.
Different from previous generations, both in how their brains are wired and work as well as in their attitudes and values to career and life in general, Generation-Y represents an enormous challenge to employers. Add to this, the fact that Gen-Y is widely misunderstood and feels alienated from the system, setting the stage for tempestuous employer – employee relationships.
But this is not all. We are entering a period that will see the largest generational shortage of workers in American history. There simply aren’t enough workers to fill the jobs. And it will get far worse in the next few years, with no relief in sight.
Generation Y (Gen-Y), the Millennials, are already beginning to realize that they are in the driver’s seat when it comes to negotiating with employers. The shortages will fuel talent wars, with desperate employers actively recruiting (stealing) employees from each other. The ability to attract and hold GenY employees may well become the single most important ingredient to their continuing success.
Employers’ will need to adopt flexible employment policies that attract Generation-Y employees. The old system of stringent rules that define every aspect of the employees’ actions will not attract the Gen-Y Millennials. They desire flexibility not rules. The generational impact of Generation Y (Gen-Y) Millennials upon the workforce is about to be felt in a way that will shake employers like never before. Wise businesses will not wait for it to happen, but will embrace the Generation y (Gen-Y) Millennials before the shortage occurs.
